Sisters in Islam (SIS) deeply regrets the cancellation of our anticipated private event on Saturday, October 14, 2023, which was meticulously organized to foster vital discussions on women’s rights and equality in Malaysia. The event was poised to shed light on the impactful film “Maryam Pagi ke Malam,” directed by Badrul Hisham Ismail and produced by Gunung Cherita Sdn Bhd, narrating the compelling story of a woman’s resilient battle against systemic patriarchy, advocating for her fundamental right to choose her life partner.

Our intended gathering was designed to encourage an open and contemplative dialogue, delving into critical issues such as safeguarding freedom of expression, addressing often overlooked obstacles faced by women within the nation’s legal and religious institutions, advocating for gender parity, and elevating the role and agency of women in our society.

However, our efforts were hindered as regulatory authorities visited the venue, a major movie theatre in Kuala Lumpur, and imposed stringent mandates, demanding unnecessary licenses even for a discreet, invitation-only screening. This unwarranted interference and high-handed arm-twisting tactic blurred the distinction between a private gathering and a public event, representing an overreach that ultimately compelled us to terminate the event, to our deep regret. It is essential to note that such actions encroach on freedom of expression for all parties involved.

While we are deeply disappointed that we cannot proceed with the event as planned, we remain steadfast in our mission to promote the rights of Muslim women and raise awareness about important issues through film and other mediums. We assure you that this setback will not deter us from our mission, as we persist in advocating for a more inclusive and equitable environment for all.
