Public Discussion before Laws are Passed

Sisters in Islam (SIS) welcomes the Cabinet decision to activate the Select Committee procedure in Parliament which will enable civil society groups and other experts to provide inputs into the country’s law-making process.

This is a major step forward in the practice of parliamentary democracy in the country as it will generate a better informed public discussion on legislation before they are passed by Parliament.

SIS also urges the Government to cease the practice of declaring draft bills as official secret before they are tabled in Parliament or State Assemblies. This will enable NGOs and other experts who were consulted in the drafting process to provide initial feedback on the draft bills before they are sent to the legislative bodies.
