Sheila Majid Performs Concert “Together for Women”

Kuala Lumpur – Acclaimed songstress Sheila Majid will be holding a special one-night only performance “Together for Women” tomorrow to raise funds for Muslim women’s rights group, SIS Forum Malaysia or more commonly known as Sisters in Islam.

The proceeds of the benefit concert will help fund services that SIS provides to the public for free. The SIS Legal Clinic also known as ‘TeleNisa’ provides gender-sensitive legal advisory services to Muslim women and men on their legal rights under the Islamic Family Law and the Syari’ah Criminal Offences Law.

“I think it’s so important for women to be aware of their rights, and to know that they have a place to turn to when things get difficult for them,” says Sheila, “and I want to support the good work SIS has been doing.”

Since its inception in 2003, it has assisted close to 7,000 clients, providing advice on cases that included polygamy, divorce, child and wife maintenance, syariah criminal law, domestic violence and apostasy.

Another service SIS provides is free workshops to raise women’s’ awareness on their rights under the Islamic laws of Malaysia, and advising them on the options available to resolve the problems they face. Muslim women face multiple problems in accessing their rights under the law. Many remain ignorant of their rights; others know their rights but face challenges because of obstacles and opposition from their husbands to their legal demands for redress or from gender biased judges and court officials.

SIS also helps its clients by accompanying them to courts and recommending lawyers to represent them. Clients may call, email or arrange face-to-face meetings with our Legal Officers with the help of Chambering students on attachment to SIS before they are called to the Bar.
