Justice for Sisters in Islam

On 17 June 2019, Sisters in Islam (SIS) turned up once again at the Kuala Lumpur High Court to hear our legal challenge against a fatwa issued by the Selangor islamic Religious Council (MAIS).

The previously scheduled date for the hearing, 2 May 2019, had been deferred at the request of the MAIS representative due to medical reasons.

“After months of waiting, we are happy to finally have our day in court,” says Rozana Isa, Executive Director for Sisters in Islam.

“SIS has full confidence that the Malaysian justice system will uphold the highest integrity and that justice will prevail for us.”

SIS is a women’s rights organisation advancing the rights of Muslim women in Malaysia. Our Telenisa services have aided over 8,400 women and men nationwide and have made a difference to over ten thousand lives. Our outreach programs not only gives awareness to women on their rights, but also creates important platforms for open discussions on current issues affecting women.

Among other issues fiercely championed by SIS include ending child marriage, ending female genital mutilation and criminalising marital rape in the country. SIS also plays an important role in pushing for law reforms particularly in the area of Muslim Family Laws in Malaysia.

Since being issued with the fatwa from MAIS, our operations has been heavily affected and our programs unreasonably scrutinised by the authorities. Moreover, we have found our organisation being unfairly used as political mileage at the expense of the work that we do for the women of Malaysia.

“We would like to thank all our volunteers, allies, and partners who turned up to support us today as well as those who have been sending us messages of encouragement and solidarity,” says Rozana. “Knowing that we have so many friends who believe in our cause for equality and justice is greatly reassuring to us and reinforces our conviction in the work that we do for the women of Malaysia.”
