Communications Officer (Content Writer/Editor)

A. OVERALL JOB PURPOSE
To advance and effectively communicate the SIS mission and vision by engaging the broader public, we are seeking a skilled and passionate Content Writer / Editor – Communications Officer to produce impactful, factual, and engaging content that advances SIS’s advocacy work. This role sits at the intersection of editorial strategy, advocacy communications, and public education.

B. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

a) Content Creation & Editorial Writing

-Research, write, and edit compelling written materials including:

-Press releases, policy statements, op-eds, media advisories, newsletters
Digital content for social media, websites, campaigns, and reports
Briefs, toolkits, speeches, and general communications

-Translate complex legal, policy, and religious topics into accessible public messaging

-Write with nuance, sensitivity, and urgency around women’s rights, Islamic law, and gender justice

b) Editorial Review & Fact-Checking

-Ensure accuracy and consistency in all outgoing communications

-Verify facts, legal references, statistics, and citations using credible sources (government data, academic studies, SIS research, etc.)

-Maintain alignment with SIS’s principles and public positions on key issues

-Edit and proofread content produced by other team members and contributors

c) Strategic communications Support

-Collaborate with the Communications Manager on messaging strategies and content planning

-Coordinate with programme teams to support advocacy campaigns and publications

-Assist in drafting responses to media inquiries and support SIS’s media relations

-Prepare content for SIS’s digital platforms, presentations, and events

d) Content Management & Knowledge Systems

-Maintain SIS’s editorial calendar and archive of fact-checked content

-Contribute to the upkeep of SIS’s internal resource bank for communications and advocacy.

A. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

-Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, Gender Studies, Islamic Studies, Law, or related field;
-At least 2 years working experience in editorial work, writing, or media content development;
-Excellent command of written and -Spoken English and Bahasa Melayu;
-Strong research and fact-checking skills, including legal and policy interpretation;
-Experience writing across formats—analytical, editorial, journalistic, and social media
-Familiarity with issues related to women’s rights, Islam, and Malaysian governance systems is an advantage.
-Editorial accuracy, strong attention to detail, and commitment to deadlines;
-Passionate to work with an NGO.

B. PREFERRED SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES

-Ability to write with a distinct, consistent, and persuasive voice
Knowledge of Syariah and civil legal systems affecting Muslim women in Malaysia is a plus.
-Experience with Mailchimp, Canva, or website CMS platforms
-A passion for social justice and alignment with SIS’s mission and values
-Comfortable working independently and in a collaborative team setting
